📍Location: Genoa, Italy
The Rehab Technologies Lab at the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) is looking for a Senior Electronics Engineer with expertise in embedded systems design for robotics (e.g., actuator boards, sensors, communication systems, etc.), to contribute to the development of cutting-edge medical devices for rehabilitation.
Spoiler:
This may be your next role if:
- You're passionate about using technology to solve real-world problems and improve people’s lives
- You have solid skills and experience in electronics system development and PCB design
- You’re looking for an opportunity to work on advanced technologies in a highly specialized, multidisciplinary environment
This is probably not the right fit if:
- You’re uncomfortable working with people from different technical backgrounds
- You need highly detailed instructions for every task, rather than figuring out the best way to get things done
- You don’t meet the technical requirements listed in the job description

Who you will be joining
The selected candidate will work within the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT), an institution founded to promote technological development in Italy and provide advanced technological education, thereby supporting the growth of the national production system. The Institute has always been committed to addressing society’s most urgent challenges through science and technology, research, and innovation — while keeping the human being at the core of its mission. The headquarters is located in Genoa and is part of a network of 11 centers across Italy and two locations in the United States. This extensive network fosters continuous exchange of knowledge, skills, and culture, which is essential to drive ethical and sustainable innovation.
Which team you will be part of
The selected candidate will join the Rehab Technologies Lab at the Italian Institute of Technology, established in 2013 through a collaboration between IIT and INAIL. The lab’s mission is to develop robotic technologies for the rehabilitation of people with motor disabilities caused by spinal cord injuries or orthopedic and neurological disorders affecting the upper limbs. In this laboratory, robotics integrates with neuroscience, rehabilitative medicine, and interaction design to create devices that can communicate with the human body and adapt to the specific needs of patients. Projects always originate from real clinical needs and are developed in collaboration with a network of national and international partners, both in the medical and institutional fields. Led by Dr. Matteo Laffranchi, the team focuses on solutions that combine robotics, medicine, and human-centered design, adopting an approach based on digital health, bodily sensoriality (embodiment), and active engagement principles (gameability). For more details on the lab’s activities, research lines, and developed devices, visit: https://rehab.iit.it
What your role will be and what you will do
The selected candidate will be involved in the electronic development of complex robotic systems, playing an active role in the design, testing, and optimization of hardware components that control actuators, sensors, communication, and power management. The role requires close collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and researchers to ensure the reliability, quality, and safety of the developed devices.Key responsibilities include:
-
Design, optimization, and testing of electronic boards for actuator and sensor control, signal conditioning, communication, and power management
-
Management of prototype production and debugging and troubleshooting activities
-
Contribution to quality control and technical compliance activities, in synergy with the rest of the team
-
Preparation of detailed technical documentation related to board manufacturing, wiring, and system testing
-
Daily collaboration with mechanical, software, and control engineers to ensure proper integration of electronic components with the rest of the robotic system
-
Possible supervision and mentoring of junior profiles, according to the laboratory’s needs
Who we are looking for:
We are seeking a candidate with a solid background in electronic engineering and a strong aptitude for applied design.
The following technical skills are considered essential:
- Degree in Electronic Engineering or related fields
- 3–5 years of experience in electronic system development and PCB design
- Excellent proficiency in design, simulation, testing, and debugging of electronic circuits
- Practical knowledge of PCB development tools (preferably Altium Designer, OrCAD, or equivalents)
- Good skills in power electronics, motor control, and embedded firmware
- Hands-on abilities in electronics (soldering, wiring, prototype building)
- Operational knowledge of the English language
The following experiences and skills are appreciated but not mandatory:
- Previous experience in robotics or medical device development
- Experience designing complex electromechanical systems
- Interest or experience in managing quality and technical compliance aspects of electronic projects
- Previous supervision of junior staff
- Experience working in international and interdisciplinary teams
- Ability to coordinate with laboratory and workshop technicians to organize testing and assembly phases
Finally, we are looking for a proactive, problem-solving individual who is eager to get hands-on with prototypes and contribute concretely to device development. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are important, as the role involves close collaboration with professionals speaking different technical languages — mechanical engineers, software developers, clinicians — in a multidisciplinary environment where effective teamwork is essential for project success.
What we offer
The position is funded by INAIL (National Institute for Insurance against Workplace Injuries) and provides a fixed-term contract lasting until December 31, 2026. The gross annual salary is €38,000, with an additional 20% bonus upon achievement of annual goals. The contract also includes:
• The possibility to subscribe to supplementary health insurance with a leading insurance company chosen by the Foundation
• The option to work remotely or agile working for up to 10 days per year
More than just salary
Joining the Rehab Technologies Lab team means working with cutting-edge technologies that combine robotics, neuroscience, medicine, and design to help people regain autonomy and improve their quality of life. It also means being part of a team where the most innovative solutions are tested, within a multidisciplinary environment rich in high-level technical expertise and driven by a strong collaborative culture.
This job offer is addressed to candidates of all genders, in compliance with Legislative Decree no. 198/2006 and subsequent amendments, as well as Legislative Decrees no. 215 and 216 of 2003 on equal treatment.
