Staff Position | Junior/senior Research Scientist in knowledge technologies

Place of work: MILAN

For a not-for-profit consortium that includes, as shareholders, 4 universities and 18 multinational companies, we are looking for PhDs with experience in either Semantic Web technologies (RDF, OWL, SPARQL and the rest of W3C stack, natural language technologies) or Human Computation (crowdsourcing, citizen science, human-in-the-loop, explainable AI).

Employees are a multidisciplinary team of over 130 people with a mix of technical, business and design skills. They are advertising two open positions (one junior and one senior) in the Knowledge Technologies Practice at this company, which is an applied research group focusing on innovative solutions based on Semantic Web technologies and Human Computation techniques in the context of international, national and regional research projects.

Tasks
Depending on the experience level, you will support project management, either as a research and development contributor or as a task or activity leader within a group of collaborators, potentially belonging to different cooperating institutions. You will communicate and disseminate research and innovation results, by bringing the correct messages to different audiences, from the scientific research community to project stakeholders and sometimes even public and private customers. 
You will ensure that the experimented knowledge technologies are at or above the state of the art, both in the scientific community and on the market, and, in the process; you will contribute redefining the state of the art for the field.
Right from the start, you will actively participate, lead or even initiate research projects within regional (FESR), national (MIUR) and European (Horizon 2020, Horizon Europe and EIT Digital) framework programmes. You will be involved in proposal writing and in scientific dissemination of project results.

What you will do

  • Participate in the entire research process, from state of the art analysis and technology scouting to development of original research hypotheses, from the design of experiments to development and testing of solutions, from dissemination to technology transfer.
  • Apply your scientific knowledge to analyse data, identify problems, devise solutions and construct methodologies, including metrics and best practices, and conduct experiments to validate these.
  • Work in collaboration with other scientists, analysts, and engineers across the company and its research and innovation partner network to design creative solutions to challenging problems.
  • Have an impact on business while working on and further developing a long-term research roadmap.
  • Within the senior position, you will carry out project management tasks, from people allocation and coordination to cost reporting and opportunity development.

Required technical skills

  • Master or PhD degree in a field involving ICT.
  • Proven specialization either in Semantic Web technologies (RDF, OWL, SPARQL and the rest of W3C stack, natural language technologies) or in Human Computation (crowdsourcing, citizen science, human-in-the-loop, explainable AI) or in both fields.
  • For the junior position, 2+ years of experience as a research contributor in applied / industrial research projects after academic graduation.
  • For the senior position, 3+ years of experience as project manager in applied / industrial research projects after academic graduation.

You will be a proactive team player, collaborating with other research scientists, as well as software developers and product owners, with a creative approach and the ability also to work autonomously to achieve the expected results.
Here are the skills you should have:

  • proven skills in multi-project and simultaneous research and project management;
  • result-oriented and highly-efficient working attitude and awareness of business opportunities resulting from research;
  • effective verbal and written communication in English at business and scientific level with an ability to write research proposals, project reports and scientific articles, give business presentations and lead technical discussions;
  • Italian language proficiency or commitment to reach Italian proficiency in the short term.

Type of contract
This is a permanent position.

Commitment
You are required to work full-time in Milan.

Salary
Remuneration will be discussed with the candidates and will depend on their skills.
