Long-term Consultancy | Tomographic image reconstruction algorithms

R&D project opportunity!

Place of work: BOLOGNA (Italy) / SMART WORKING

Multinational company specializing in high frequency X-ray imaging systems requires consultancy on image reconstruction algorithms for the development of an innovative computed tomography system for soft tissues.

Work environment
The employer is a multinational company in the healthcare, specializing in high frequency X-ray imaging systems. The project is managed by the R&D team located in Bologna (Italy) and leaded by a PhD physicist, who will be the reference point for the consultant.

Subject of investigation
The project aims to develop an innovative computed tomography system for soft tissues. With the support of the R&D team for the physical part (regarding the radiation generation and the radiation-matter interactions involved), the consultant will perform a Proof of Concept with the following steps:

  1. simulation of the experimental subject with simplified human-like dummies;
  2. simulation of a simplified tomographic setup including the radiation source, the detector and the rotation of the dummy;
  3. simulation of the tomographic projections;
  4. tomographic reconstruction of the dummy;
  5. investigation and development of the best possible reconstruction algorithms to reach the goal.

The consultant will be required to:

  • investigate tomographic algorithms applicable to the subject matter;
  • choose the most promising one with respect to the set-up and goals of the project;
  • develop the algorithm until the concept can be proved or, if the proof will have a negative outcome, to carefully present scientific arguments against the feasibility of the project.

Required skills

  • Experience with image reconstruction algorithms, preferably for tomography and preferably – but not mandatorily – for life-sciences applications.
  • Strong mathematical background.
  • Professional proficiency in spoken and written English and/or Italian.

Type of contract
The consultant will be hired by the non-profit Consortium for Technology Transfer C2T (promotor of Find Your Doctor and contractor of the consultancy) for the duration of the project. A positive outcome of the consultancy will open to a permanent position at the destination company.

The estimated duration of the project is 3-6 months, depending on the consultant’s experience and availability. The official duration will be defined together with the best candidates after a technical interview. Smart working is allowed.

The estimated gross salary is 10,000 Euros + 5,500 Euros as a “success prize” if the goals described in the above section “Tasks” are reached. Small variations in the incomes could be discussed depending on the candidate’s experience and after a joint technical assessment.
